How To Encourage Girls in STEM

Hack4Good

The Hack4Good Hackathon dedicated to the topic “How to Encourage Girls in STEM” was held on July 28-29 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Six selected teams of motivated girls were competing with their ideas on how to raise the interest of girls aged 8 to 12 years to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics). Many promising projects were presented, including STEM-festival for the girls, thematic stickers design, and STEM-for-girls comix development.

The ACM Ukraine team presented the “STEM for Girls Summer School” project code-named CodeKID with the motto “you can’t be what you can’t see”. This concept is indeed a fresh STEM-oriented mini-course for girls, combined with excursions to offices of IT companies, interactive technical museums, contests, lectures from outstanding inspirers and other activities aimed at increasing their interest in STEM, to showcase the perspectives by examples, and to assure them: “Yes, You CAN”!
