FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) in Ankara, Turkey

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL), which started in 2005, aims to make 9-16 year olds question, reason, and work as a team as well as raise awareness of science and technology and their importance in finding solutions to community problems. One example from this years competition, which took place on on 22-23 February in Hacettepe University, Ankara, is the LegODTU team's "Catch the Carbon, Kick the Fire", which was aimed to decrease the damage of forest fires. This project was built by 7 students aged 13-14. After the event students reported to have a great experience and enjoyed being a part of such a big event. The competition helps them build new and strong friendships, as they find an opportunity to contribute solutions to some of the problems affecting our world and humanity.

September 2015 (24th to 26th) is the time to be in Uppsala, Sweden, where the second edition of ACM-W Europe’s celebration of women in computing, womENcourage 2015 is planned.

The first edition of womENcourage was celebrated on March 1, 2014 at Manchester University in Manchester, UK. Over 250 attendees engagingly listened to high profile women speakers, interacted with positive female role models in panels, discussed with like-minded peers in unconference sessions and mingled with others interested in empowering women to pursue their goals in Computer Science and Information Technology.
September 2015, Uppsala University will host the next event: with more attendees, more activities, more variety of topics, and much more! In order to accomplish this, volunteers are an essential asset. Would you like to collaborate with us? Please email acm-w-europe@acm.org indicating your interests (e.g. reviewing poster/paper submissions, on-site assistance).

10th London Hopper

On Thursday 22 May 2014, BCS (British Computing Society) London office held the 10th Hopper Colloquium.

The London Hopper Colloquium is a one day free event celebrating the achievements of women in the field of computer science and technology. It aims to bring together researchers and students from different areas of the discipline to discuss their research, exchange ideas and inspire the next generation of women to join their league.

Bedour Alshaigy, a PhD student in Oxford Brookes University, the 1st prize winner in the poster competition at the 9th London Hopper, returned as a speaker to the 10th London Hopper this year. This year, unlike previous years' poster competitions, Hopper Colloquium held a Research Spotlight Competition for post-graduate students (from MScs to Post-Docs). Duygu Simsek, from Knowledge Media Institute, in Open University, UK was one of the finalists. Both praise the inspiring and friendly environment London Hopper manages to create. “There was an incredible range of computing projects that can only be described as awe-inspiring and innovative. Not even once was I intimidated about asking questions out of fear of looking stupid, on the contrary, I was encouraged, supported,” says Bedour. Her top reasons to attend London Hopper?
1. It is an excellent networking opportunity to connect with other researchers in computer science and industry professionals.
2. You get to learn about the latest cutting edge research in computing which makes you stay ahead of the game.
3. You can participate in the poster competition, and there is always a chance you could win cash prizes.
4. Most importantly, you get to meet old friends, and make new ones!
