2023 ACM Europe Summer School on “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications”
The 2023 ACM Europe Summer School on “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications” took place in Barcelona 2nd July – 7th July, 2023. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) organized this 4th edition of the school. Distinguished scientists in the HPC field gave lectures and tutorials addressing architecture, software and applications for HPC and AI. Additionally, there were invited talks and on the last day, the ACM School had the honour to host the A.M. Turing Award laureate Leslie Lamport, who was interviewed by Dr. Alba Cervera, senior researcher on Quantum Computing at BSC.
The school was possible thanks to the support from ACM, BSC, the EPI (European Processor Initiative) projects and the industrial sponsors: Huawei and Fujitsu. The national Spanish supercomputing network, RES, also provided financial support. The project RISC2 offered financial support to some Latin American students to attend the school.
The school focused on young computer science researchers and engineers and it was open to outstanding MSc students.
In total, 282 applications were received. After a severe selection process, 60 students were chosen. Among them, 24 female and 36 male students. There were 25 nationalities present among the students from Asia, EU, and LATAM, making this school a truly international experience.
All attendees received a certificate, signed by the Chairpersons, for successfully completing the school.
The summer school evaluation was very positive, both from the students’ perspective and the organisers’ and lecturers’ points of view:
Mateo Valero (BSC) was the general school chair, Dr. Fabrizio Gagliardi (ACM and BSC) was the school's director and co-led the local organising committee with Prof. Eduard Ayguadé (BSC and UPC), Prof. Maria Ribera Sancho (BSC and UPC), Dr. Amalia Hafner (BSC) and Ms. Andrea Sansano (BSC), who was also responsible of the general organization. Ms. Agostina Bosich (BSC) and Ms. Carolina Olmo (BSC) were part of the organizing support staff.
