2022 ACM Europe Summer School on “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications”
The 2022 ACM Europe Summer School on “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications” took place in Barcelona from 29 August – 2 September 2022. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) hosted the 3rd edition of the school. Distinguished scientists in the HPC field gave lectures and tutorials addressing architecture, software stack and applications for HPC and AI, invited talks, a panel on The Future of HPC and a final keynote by Prof Mateo Valero. On the last day of the week, the ACM School merged with MATEO2022 (“Multicore Architectures and Their Effective Operation 2022”), attended by world-class experts in computer architecture in the HPC field.
The school was possible thanks to the direct financial support from ACM, BSC, EPI and the industrial sponsors: Huawei, IBM and Lenovo. RES, the national Spanish supercomputing network, also provided financial support. The project RISC2 offered financial support for Latin American students to attend the school.
The summer school addressed young computer science researchers and engineers and was open to outstanding MSc students.
In total, 205 applications were received. During the selection process, 50 students were chosen. Among the attendees were nine female students (almost 20% of the total). There were 28 nationalities present among the students, making this school a truly multicultural experience.
All attendees received a certificate, signed by the Chairpersons, for successfully completing the school. Six students were also given a certificate of honour due to their high scores in the practical exercises.
The summer school evaluation was very positive, both from the students’ perspective and the organisers’ and lecturers’ points of view. The survey distributed to students yielded high scores:
- Quality of the lecturers: 6.47/7
- Overall satisfaction with the organisation of the school: 6.26/7
- Likelihood to recommend the school to colleagues: 6.53/7
This school has been once again a very successful event, serving as a meeting point for young researchers in HPC and AI.
