2025 ACM Europe Summer School on “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications”
Welcome to the 2025 ACM Summer School! This year's program focuses on High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and will also explore emerging research areas such as Quantum Computing. The “HPC Computer Architectures for AI and Dedicated Applications”, will take place from 21-25 July in Barcelona, Spain, hosted by The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, and ACM Europe are the main sponsors of the school. The school also counts on the support of the Severo Ochoa programme and a number of industrial sponsors.
The summer school addresses young computer science researchers and engineers and is open to outstanding MSc students. 60 accepted participants will spend one week in Barcelona, attending formal lectures, invited talks, and networking activities. The school will have a practical hands-on approach with interactive exercises.
The school will cover accommodation expenses in shared rooms and catering for the duration of the school. Travel expenses are to be covered by the selected participants. A limited number of up to 300€ travel grants will be available for specially meritorious applicants.
Prof. Michela Taufer (University of Tennessee) and Dr. Rosa Badia (BSC & UPC) will begin the ACM School with an introduction to HPC parallel programming techniques and Workflows for HPC & AI. On Day two, Prof. Josep Lluís Berral (BSC & UPC) will give a lecture on distributed data analytics, while Dr. Javier Aula Blasco (BSC) and Dr. Júlia Falcao (BSC) will cover Building and Evolving a Multilingual LLM. On Day three, students will meet the scientists at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. This will be followed by a guided tour of the MareNostrum5 Supercomputer and the newly inaugurated Quantum systems, as well as social activities in the afternoon. The fourth day is dedicated to HPC and AI processor design, with lectures by Prof. Andrea Bartolini (University of Bologna) on sustainable generative AI and HPC systems and Pablo Vizcaino (BSC) on RISC-V prototypes for HPC. Day five will feature a class on Quantum Computing, an industry track, and an invited talk by Luca Benini (University of Bologna and ETHZ). BSC’s Director, Prof. Mateo Valero, will conclude with a final keynote.
All attendees will receive a certificate and a complimentary ACM student membership upon school completion. During the one-year complimentary membership, students will receive electronic subscriptions to Communications of the ACM, ACM’s flagship magazine, and XRDS, ACM’s magazine written and edited by students for students. Students will also receive access to online books, videos and courses from leading provider Skillsoft on today’s most sought-after job skills. And much more.
The general chair of the school is Prof. Mateo Valero, Director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). Dr Fabrizio Gagliardi (ACM and BSC) is the school's director and leads the local organising committee with Prof. Antonio Rubio (BSC and UPC), Dr. Teresa Cervero (BSC), and Ms Tamara Kovazh (BSC).
The registration period will be available between 1 April and 30 April end-of-day AoE.
Accepted candidates will be informed by 30 May.
