Crowd Data Sourcing

Crowdsourcing is a powerful project management and procurement strategy that enables value realization via an “open call” to an unlimited pool of people through Web-based technology. Our focus here is crowd data sourcing where the crowd is involved in obtaining data, processing it, aggregating it, and, developing dedicated applications over sourced data. This course will focus on the link between crowd data sourcing and database research and on the role of human factors in crowd data sourcing.
- Part 1 introduces crowdsourcing via platforms and applications and classifies them into domain-specific/generic, paying/non-paying, etc. It describes the main steps of task deployment, namely, worker recruitment, task assignment, task completion, learning workers’ and requesters’ characteristics, and worker compensation. It also summarizes the main research challenges in crowdsourcing.
- Part 2 is dedicated to database query processing with the crowd.
- Part 3 focuses on human factors in crowdsourcing and how they affect different crowdsourcing processes. It describes in detail algorithmic task assignment whereby workers and tasks are matched.
- Part 4 contains a description of open research questions in crowdsourcing and an assignment for attendees.
