Ioannina (Epirus, Greece)
Located in the Νorthwestern part of the country, Ioannina sits in the center of a valley, amongst enormous mountains near a wonderful lake, just an hour from the sunny Ionian Pelago beaches. The town was built on the famous Egnatia Odos, the road that connects Europe with Asia, one of he most ancient routes in history, once used by the Persians and ancient Greeks. Traveling to Ioannina
By plane:
The most convenient way to reach Ioannina is by air via Athens, which is well-connected to international destinations. Conference participants can book domestic flights from Athens International Airport (ATH) to Ioannina (IOA) through the official Aegean Airlines website. There are two daily return flights: one at 10:15 AM and another at 6:10 PM, with a flight duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes. To minimize transfer delays, it is recommended to book the ATH-IOA-ATH flights early and arrange suitable connecting flights to/from Athens. Note that booking the domestic flight separately (rather than as part of a multi-leg trip) may simplify the process. Upon arrival, a taxi from Ioannina Airport to the conference hotel costs approximately €10.
Alternatively, Ioannina can also be reached via Preveza (PVK) or Corfu (CFU) airports, which may have direct flights from certain European cities.
- From Preveza (PVK): Take a taxi or local bus to Preveza Intercity Bus Station (KTEL Preveza), then board an intercity bus to Ioannina.
- From Corfu (CFU): Travel to the Corfu port, take a ferry to Igoumenitsa, and then continue by bus to Ioannina. This route can take several hours, so if you choose this option, consider spending some time in Corfu to make the journey more worthwhile.
By bus:
There are also bus services to Ioannina from Thessaloniki and Athens. Please visit the Ioannina Bus company (ktelioannina.gr/en/) for details about schedules, trip durations, and tickets. A bus trip from Thessaloniki to Ioannina takes 210 minutes, whereas a bus trip from Athens to Ioannina takes 315 minutes. Note that the intercity bus stations at Thessaloniki and Athens are frequently connected with the corresponding international airports by urban bus services (airport to bus station routes in Thessaloniki and Athens take approximately 1 hour). Taxi service from Ioannina intercity bus station to the conference hotel currently costs about 7 euro.
