ACM-W Europe Celebration of Women in Computing: womENcourage 2016 (http://womencourage.acm.org/) will be held on September 12-13, 2016 at Johannes Kepler University, in Linz Austria. The program is online and will include inspiring keynote speakers, panel discussions, a Career Fair and Posters on both days of the Celebration.

Take advantage of the early-bird registration, and register here! Early registration fee is only 50 Euros for ACM student members. What's more? You can win a free registration! Every 30th registration in June will be awarded a free registration to the conference.

An interview with the 3rd womENcourage's keynote speaker Prof. Gerhard Widmer

The program committee of ACM-W Europe womENcourage 2016 announces that Prof. Gerhard Widmer, who he heads the Institute for Computational Perception the Johannes Kepler University Linz, will present a keynote address at the 3rd womENcourage. In addition to his work at JKU, Gerhard also founded and leads the Intelligent Music Processing and Machine Learning Group at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI), Vienna. He is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI), and the recipient of an ERC Advanced Grant (2015) of the European Research Council.

In his talk, Gearhard will give us a glimpse of what it means for a computer to 'perceive' and in some (limited) sense 'understand' music, and what such musically literate machines can do for us. Bev Bachmayer spoke to Gerhard about his planned presentation and his motivation for speaking.

Bev:	In your opinion, why should students attend womENcourage 2016?
Gerhard:	It is a great opportunity to get to know interesting and nice and like-minded persons (of either sex). You get to learn about what they do, get inspired by their ideas and enthusiasm and big and small successes. You can find out that you are not the only person in the world facing certain difficulties, and get inspiration from how others deal with these.
Bev:	What do you hope the attendees will take away from your talk?
Gerhard:	That computer science is an exciting field, and that there are still many open research frontiers. And that scientific research is beautiful and even fun (sometimes).

Intel and ACM-W pull together workshops to teach kids electronics

In response to the increasing gap between technical jobs and trained professionals to fill them, Intel and ACM-W Europe have developed a workshop on basic electronics that targets students aged between 9-16 with the goal of opening these youngsters to the creative possibilities of engineering and programming. Last week, ACM-W Europe conducted this workshop at a Greek International School in Munich, Germany. "One thing I learned is that teaching kids is really inspiring for the trainers," writes Bev Bachmayer, the creator of this innovative workshop, "through the experience of teaching multiple workshops, I am building a set of best known methods for delivery of the workshops." Women in HPC at ISC, June 2016, Frankfurt, Germany: Call for participation

Women in HPC will hold the fourth international Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) workshop at ISC 2016, which will once again bring together the HPC community to discuss the growing importance of increasing diversity in the workplace. This workshop aims to recognize and discuss the challenges faced by women, one of many underrepresented groups that exist in HPC, as well as opportunities for broadening participation in HPC fields and activities to encourage women to enter the field. The workshop will show special consideration to differing legislation affecting hiring and employment practices among the different countries. Women in HPC will also be hosting a BoF to share tactics on diversifying our workforce, how to combat unconscious bias and a discussion of the challenges faced by employers and employees with respect to diversity in the HPC community.
