ACM Celebration of Women in Computing womENcourage 2018: "Creating the Future Together" Belgrade, Serbia October 3-5, 2018

Join us for the 5th ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: womENcourage 2018 in the beautiful city of Belgrade, Serbia on October 3-5 2018. The program includes a Hackathon, Workshops, Posters, Technical Talks and Panel Discussions and is sure to have something for everyone. Come to meet new and old friends, network with like-minded colleagues and enjoy sightseeing in historic Belgrade.

Diversity workshop at EuroBSDcon

ACM-W Europe strives to increase diversity in technical communities and, as one of its activities, it offers to deliver diversity support workshops at technical events. The last such workshop was held on September 23, 2017 in Paris at the EuroBSDcon 2017. Read the blog about the event here.

First Workshop on Gender Equality in Software Engineering

ICT is pervasively influencing all human activities. In this context, more and more people of any age, gender and culture is exposed to such technologies and has to acquire some ability and skill in this context.

For reasons that are still being studied, the engagement of genders with ICT is not uniform. This gap is occurring at all levels and it is evident, for instance, in the small percentage of women covering top positions in professional and academic activities in the field.

At the same time, the community is realising that diversity, when it does not assume the negative aspects of discrimination, plays a key role to a successful and competitive context for software development and research. Such diversity is not only related to gender aspects but refers also to the combination of culture, religion and geographical distribution.

In this context, the purpose of this workshop, which will be held as part of ICSE 2018, is to discuss about the role, difficulties and opportunities concerning people of different gender in the field of software engineering, in research, education and industry.

To be eligible to apply, you will need to be in your final year of study or recently graduated. You will also need to be available to attend an assessment discovery day on 26th February should you be selected. Please note if you have already applied to the 2018 Technology Graduate Programme, and you were not successful, unfortunately you will not be able to apply again. For those not in graduating years, the American Express 10 week Summer Internship is also open for applications! To be eligible to apply, you will be graduating in 2019 or 2020. The deadline for both programmes is 7th February 2018 but we would strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible as we assess applications on a rolling basis.

Informatica Feminale 2018, Bremen University, Germany

The University of Bremen, Germany, invites women experts in computer science / informatics to contribute to the 21st Informatica Feminale. The international summer university for women in computing will take place from August 06 to August 24, 2018 in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Bremen University.

The Call for Contributions 2018 is open: course offers can be submitted until February 10, 2018.

Submissions for courses and talks on topics like gender, equality, technology and ethics are much invited. Also lecturers with course offers on career topics.

Companies with gender sensible organizational concepts and successful personal management strategies to promote women engineers to a broad spectrum of leading positions are invited to present their best practices to the participants of Informatica Feminale. Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

Following the mission of ACM-W to foster women participation in the field of computing, ACM-W Europe invites the community to welcome and recognize accomplishments of ACM Women in Europe who made significant contributions through their technical and professional excellence.

Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines:

ACM Fellow: September 7, 2018
Distinguished Members: August 1, 2018
Senior Members: March 3, 2018

Nominations are due January 15, 2019 for the following ACM awards:

A.M. Turing Award: Major contributions of lasting importance in computing
ACM Prize in Computing: - (previously known as the ACM-Infosys Foundation Award) early to mid-career fundamental innovative contribution in computing that, through its depth, impact and broad implications, exemplifies the greatest achievements in the discipline.
Distinguished Service Award: service contributions to the computing community at large
Grace Murray Hopper Award: outstanding young computer professional, based on a single recent major technical or service contribution
Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award: theoretical accomplishments that have had significant impact on practice
Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award: advancing new teaching methodologies, curriculum development in computing, or significant contributions to ACM’s educational mission
Eugene L. Lawler Award for Humanitarian Contributions within Computer Science and Informatics: recognizes an individual or group who has made a significant contribution through the use of computing technology. The presentation of this award alternates with the ACM Policy Award
ACM – AAAI Allen Newell Award : career contributions with breadth or that bridge computer science and other disciplines
Outstanding Contribution to ACM Award: outstanding contributions to ACM, in both value and degree
Software System Award: developing a software system that has had a lasting influence
ACM Athena Lecturer Award: celebrates women researchers who have made fundamental contributions to Computer Science; please note: nominations for the Athena Lecturer Award are now open to all (prior to 2016 only SIG Leaders could submit nominations)
